Kirby Mountain Sporting Dogs
15 Day
Obedience Course
Are you tired
of certain behaviors that your dog exhibits daily?
Did you go to
puppy kindergarten or an obedience class and your dog is not doing what you
expected?
Are you at wits
end, ready to give your dog away because it just won’t behave when it should?
WE CAN HELP YOU AND YOUR
DOG.
After training
over 1500 dogs, we have developed a program that works. Most importantly it
will work for you. After teaching many dogs in conventional obedience classes
and seeing the failure rate, I knew there had to be a better way. Training dogs
inside a room, inside a building and expecting it to carry over its training in
the outside world (noise, cars, people, animals, etc.) is hopeful at best, not
very realistic.
What makes our
program successful when others are not? We use an Electronic Training Collar (e-collar).
Over 30 years ago when
these products were first used, they were called shock collars and had one
setting - shock. When I think of the concept of a shock, it scares me too. In our training program, the dog receives a
light electrical stimulation; just enough to have it comply with the task at
hand. It is not shocked; it is stimulated. Today’s e-collars have graduated
settings for the appropriate amount of stimulation required for the task.
When people
come to us as their last resort for their dog’s poor behavior and we tell them
that we use the e-collar, many of them think of the worst kind of shock and
what it will do to their dog. As a trainer/breeder, what I see in these people
are the people who would be in tears when their dog runs out the front door,
into the road, and gets hit by a car in full view of their family or the people
who would be devastated when their dog jumps up and knocks down and elderly
person or a small child and causes injury to the person knocked down. These are
real events that have happened to owners and their dogs. The stimulation from
the e-collar does not seem as devastating as the consequences that can occur
from a disobedient dog.
We have helped hundreds
of people in the last few years so that they can now enjoy their dogs beyond
their own expectations. From 10 lb. Dachshunds to 100 lb. Labradors, we can
train your dog and YOU to live happily together.
Notice in the
previous sentence that we’ve said, “We can train your dog and YOU to live happily together.” Living happily together
becomes a reality when two things change: #1 the dog’s behavior (which the
e-collar promotes) and, equally as important, #2 your behavior! These two
changes must happen together for a successful outcome.
Change #1: The
Dog’s Behavior
Dogs are
ill-behaved for two reasons: either the dog does not know how to do what is
expected or the dog won’t do what is expected of it. When your dog first
arrives, we begin training the dog to know what is expected of it (this is done
without the e-collar). Once the dog knows the expectation, we then work on
training the dog when it won’t do what is expected (this involves the use of
the e-collar). How does this work?
The best age to
start this work is around 5 months-of-age. Before this time, a puppy does not
have the attention span to complete the tasks at hand. Also before this time,
puppies seem to do the right things: the dog comes when called, sits, walks
okay on the leash, and, because of their size, no one pays much attention to
the fact that it jumps up on people. However, once the dog reaches 5 – 7
months-of-age, it has reached the equivalent of its teen years. At this time,
the dog no longer listens or behaves and your perfect little puppy is now Demon
Dog.
This is the
time for our obedience course—this is when we can help.
When you make
the decision to enroll in our 15 Day Obedience Course, you should read the training contract for all the specifics
(including pricing). Be prepared to bring your dog’s up to date medical records
for shots and proof of recent stool sample proving negative on worms and parasites.
You will bring your dog to us, and it will stay for 15 days. We have everything
here that is necessary to board and train your dog (the only exception would be
if your dog is on a veterinary diet, for which we would expect you to supply
that food).
The drop off
time is only 15 minutes and we will work with the dog for the next 15 days.
After the 15 days, be prepared for:
Change #2:
Owner Behavior
You will need
to plan to be here for at least an hour so that you can learn how to be
successful with your dog. This is the final lesson where you and your dog will
begin working together for a successful companionship. You must be able to
follow through with the methods used in the training of your dog. Your dog now
knows what is expected of it because it has been trained. Your training is as
important if you want the dog’s training to be affective.
Here is what
your dog will learn:
Never to jump
on anyone anytime;
Not to bite or
nip at hands or clothing;
To come when
called 100% of the time no matter what;
And to sit on
command.
Though we said
earlier that the best time to start this program is with a 5 – 7 month old dog,
you should know that a dog is never too old to go through this program. We have
trained dogs as old as 8 years.
Hope to hear
from you soon,
John &
